Independent Senator for Tasmania Jacqui Lambie will interrogate the relationship between big business and politicians during a public hearing of the Senate Select Committee into the Political Influence of Donations in Melbourne today.
“This is an opportunity to shine a light on the cosy relationship between big business and big political parties. We’ll be asking what political parties are selling, and what political donors think they’re buying,” Senator Lambie said.
“Transparency and accountability are crucial elements of Australia’s democracy and I want to see that upheld throughout the whole democratic process – including political donations.
“Australians have a right to know who’s seeing value out of a political donation,” Senator Lambie said.
“Only this week it was revealed the Tasmanian Liberal Party has been taking donations from Yuhu Group subsidiaries. This is the very company ASIO told them not to take donations from.
“I can’t support a system that lets politicians put their financial security ahead of our national security,” Senator Lambie said.
